Belly Button Oiling (AKA) Nabhi Chikitsa, an Ayurvedic practice.


A centuries old practice, Belly Button Oiling has a vast host of health benefits for the entire body. Ayurvedic experts practiced this method of healing to obtain optimum relief for medical ailments. If you think about it, our belly button is the source of energy connected to other parts of the body; to the mouth, the skin and even to health concerns like menstrual cramps. During the first 9 months of our lives, it was literally our "life source".

The belly button is situated over some pretty major organs, arteries, nerves, and energy flow, thus you could say it is like a major freeway/highway connection for our body. The biggest nerve, the vagus, is a major nerve that not only connects to the brain, but also to many major organs in our body. The vagus nerve is responsible for many bodily functions, including, but not limited to:

  • Sends and receives sensory information from the throat, heart, lungs, and abdomen, as well as taste sensation from the tongue.

  • Provides motor functions for the muscles responsible for swallowing and speech.

  • Responsible for function of the digestive tract, respiration, and heart rate.

  • Delivers information between the gut and the brain.

  • Plays a part in fear management and dealing with stress and anxiety.

It is believed that by stimulating this major nerve, you can bring into effect improvement in the above listed areas. In more recent times, many tests have been done using electrical charges to the nerve to stimulate change, but the ancient Ayurvedic method relies on ingredients that the earth has provided since early in time. Information passed down from generation to generation, and there has to be a reason for that... effectiveness.

Another supporting factor to the theory of belly button healing is because of it's proximity to many of our vital organs, such as the stomach (or gut), intestines, kidneys, spleen, etc. Of most importance is it's location over the gut, which is responsible for producing the majority of our serotonin and nearly half of our dopamine. Both hormones regulate our happiness and joy levels. There is also the natural flora of microbes in the gut,making it an essential organ for regulation of mood and emotions.

We all recognize the criticism that flows generously from the medical community. Frequently, the judgement of these professionals is proven incorrect. We get there is a struggle between "natural" and man created treatments, but it doesn't mean this isn't worth giving it a try. What do you have to lose? Without big Pharma, perhaps we all would still be educated in the ways of natural, but effective, healing through ingredients readily available in nature. The method is simple, but still proves to be an applicable source of healing that can be practiced by all. So here we go on the different uses.

  • Softer skin - Try Almond oil to improve texture and add a glow to skin.

  • Acne - Neem oil seems to be the key to clear skin.

  • Anti-Aging, Hair & Nail Growth - A bit of castor oil might just bring about that additional improvement you've been looking for.

  • Vision - Coconut oil seems to be the master of this domain for improving issues with the eyes.

  • Menstrual cramps - It seems a bit of ginger, added to olive oil as a carrier, can reduce the severity of cramping.

  • Stomach aches - A bit of peppermint oil, added to olive oil as a carrier, can improve just about any stomach discomfort.

  • Fertility - This one is for both men and women, Coconut oil is the answer. It works by promoting relaxation in the uterine, increases sperm mobility and count.

  • Infection - Oil of Oregano, Tea Tree and Eucalyptus (one at a time) combined with Coconut oil can effectively kill bacteria.

  • Balancing your Chakra - Grape Seed oil helps you connect to your creative energy, which in turn balances our energy points.

  • Anxiety - CBD (THC free) oil is an amazing gift from earth that appears to have no side effects and is amazing at calming anxiety and hormonal rage symptoms.

How to use: It is suggested the oils be applied in a warm state for better absorption by the body. Just 3 to 5 drops of an oil is enough to reach the desired treatment. Please keep in mind that the oils we've recommend using with a carrier oil are to pure and ,thus, much stronger when applying directly on the skin. With these oils, it is recommend to place the carrier oil into the naval first, followed by a 1 to 2 drops of the stronger oil. If you use an oil and get a bit of a burning sensation, you know this oil has likely not been diluted and should be used with a carrier oil.

This may be a bit outside your comfort zone, but I can personally attest to the difference in my nerve health since using CBD in my belly button. This whole journey started when putting drops under my tongue made me nauseous, but the resulting ease in my anxiety increased my desire to find a way to make CBD work. As spirit always does, I was sharing this with a client who turned me on to this new way of improving body function. It's so easy to do and has endless applications.
